Including a character reference list can be something valuable, and you can include this with your resume in an interview.

It's okay to include retired managers, if they will give you a solid reference. Typically employers have the potential to give the strongest recommendations. So consider these folks first and foremost. It's also advised that you talk to each of the individuals you wish to include as references. Ensure they are still willing to provide a good reference for you and that you have their updated contact information. Nothing worse than a reference listed with a wrong number.
