Interview Story - Overcame Challenge

This was probably the most challenging situation I ever faced, but in the end, it was worth it because of the experience I gained. After working at St. Anthony’s for five years as a graphic designer and creating the creative department to cut costs, I was part of a mass reduction in force because of the recession.

I was scared but decided that this was the perfect time to venture out on my own and start my own consulting company. Even though my supervisor was crushed that I was being let go, she was excited to hear this because St. Anthony’s now needed a freelancer to work on tons of marketing collateral. I had most of the equipment at home and quickly set up my office for work.

Within a few weeks, I had the rest of the equipment purchased and a DBA account with my bank. With St. Anthony’s being my first client and enough work to tide me over for a while, I began seeking more clients by reconnecting with colleagues and community members, who were familiar with my work. They were excited and supportive of me and sent others my way via word of mouth and recommendations. I soon had more than enough clients.

This experience not only sharpened my design and branding skills, but also taught me so much about running a business in general, managing my own books, and being my own marketing coordinator and salesperson.

As much as I appreciated the success of this business, I eventually missed the camaraderie of working for a larger organization, so returned to a full-time position. Still, I continued with this for a year after I started the graphic design position at Bar-Welmer, to ensure a smooth transition for my clients.
