Body Language in the Interview

One key thing to begin with, is to not let body language overwhelm you in the interview. Body language is secondary to your overall performance in the interview. So don't let the positioning of your hands, or neck, or legs, or anything else distract you from doing the job that you need to do during the interview.

Now that being said, there are a few things that you can do to make yourself look more effective during the interview. The first thing that you want to do is make sure you are not hunched over. If you're hunched over or somehow closed up (that means your arms folded, your legs folded, things like that) you’re going to look closed to the interviewer and less confident, less likely to connect with them as an individual.

Sit upright, and have your body open. Have your hands and arms open, and slightly away from your body, so you don't look like you're protecting yourself or are intimidated by the job interviewer.

The next thing to think about how you're using your hands when you speak. You don't want to be so expressive with your hands that you’re distracted during the interview, and at the same time, your hands can make you look more multi-dimensional. So don't be afraid to gesture along with your success stories.

If you cross your legs above the knee, it can sometimes bend your body and put your body in an awkward position. So, when you can, fold your legs below the knee, at your ankles.
