What's the optimal set-up/background for a Zoom meeting or interview?
1. Neutral & Professional Setting
- Choose a neutral, tidy space with minimal distractions.
- Avoid clutter, personal items, or anything that may seem unprofessional.
- A plain wall, or a room with a simple bookshelf or artwork, works well. It should not draw too much attention.
2. Good Lighting
- Ensure your face is well-lit. Natural light is best, so try to sit facing a window. If that's not possible, use a lamp in front of you to brighten your face.
- Avoid strong backlighting, like a bright window behind you, which can cast shadows and make you appear too dark.
3. Distance & Framing
- Frame yourself so that your upper body (head and shoulders) is centered on the screen, with a little space above your head.
- Sit a few feet away from the camera for a balanced, professional look. Avoid sitting too close.
4. Virtual Backgrounds
- If your surroundings are too distracting or messy, consider using a Zoom virtual background.
- Stick with something simple and neutral (like a clean office space), avoiding anything too flashy or playful. Make sure your computer can handle a virtual background without affecting video quality. If possible, test it beforehand.
5. Remove Distractions
- Keep pets, family members, or any movement out of the frame.
- Silence your phone, close any noisy apps, and ensure your background stays calm and focused.
6. Test in Advance
- Perform a test call before your interview to see how your background, lighting, and camera placement look.
- Adjust as needed to ensure a clean, professional setting.
7. Color Coordination
- Avoid wearing colors that blend into your background. Instead, choose colors that contrast slightly, so you stand out against your background.
By focusing on a clean, well-lit, and distraction-free environment, you'll create a professional setting that keeps the interviewer focused on you, not your background!
