Can I call a potential employer I'll be interviewing with to find out how the interview process will go and who my interviewer(s) will be?
During the beginning stages of setting up an interview, is the best time to gather as many facts as you can, about the position and about the company. Don't be afraid to ask for the name and job title of the interviewer you will be meeting with.
If the third-party recruitment company doesn't know who the hiring manager is, or who you will be meeting with, that's a sign you should approach the company, doing the hiring, and apply through them directly.
Sometimes in the excitement of setting up an interview, we can forget to ask who we'll be meeting with. It's perfectly okay to call back the individual who set up your interview, or email and inquire about whom you'll be meeting with. Additionally, you can contact the hiring company directly. Oftentimes, HR or the person answering their phones will have the details of who will be interviewing you and how your interview will be conducted.
- When I arrive, whom should I ask for?
- Do you happen to know who I will be interviewing with?
- Would you have any insight into the format of the interview? Roughly how long should it last?
- Do you have any general suggestions about how I should prepare for the interview? Is there anything new going on at the company that I should know about?
From there, research the interviewer, dive into the company website, Google them, and search through LinkedIn, etc. Going into the interview with this extra knowledge gives you an added edge over your competition.
