How to connect with your interviewer(s)...

Connecting with your interviewer is essential to your success.

So first, begin building a connection with your interviewer by understanding who they are ahead of time. While setting up your interview, don't be afraid to ask who you will be interviewing with. Then spend some time researching them: LinkedIn profile/Facebook, check the company website for their biography/about me, plug their name into Google Scholar, etc, and look for commonalities that can help you build rapport.

While in the interview - here are some tips to consider:
  • Introduction - Greet them warmly and let them know it's a pleasure to be meeting for this opportunity.
  • Be Genuine - It's important be friendly and personable (remember your research), as well as optimistic, and enthusiastic.
  • Show Your Interest In The Interviewer - Use questions like "How long have you worked here?", "Have you had other roles at the firm?", or "How long is your commute?"
  • Make It Personal - Share small details about your outside interests or background information to help them relate to you as a person.
  • Poised Posture - Sit up straight, make frequent eye contact, lean forward just slightly in your chair and nod in agreement when appropriate.
  • Demonstrate Your Interest In The Company - Ask insightful questions about the company culture like, "What's camaraderie like between employees?", "Do colleagues get together outside of the office?", or "Do you offer any team bonding opportunities or excursions?"
  • Conclude Graciously - Sincerely thank your interviewer for their time and insight.
  • Follow-up Immediately - Send a personalized Thank-You Note via email.
