No Response After Sending Your Application
There are 3 reasons you might not hear back:
-
You aren't applying to the right jobs for you.
-
You aren't presenting yourself effectively as you can (resume, cover letter, informational interview conversations) making sure that you show a clear match between you and the jobs you want.
-
You aren't applying to jobs as well as you could and should. A single job posting can have well over 100 resumes received for it and maybe only a dozen people will be interviewed to some degree. So if you aren't applying to jobs while ensuring that you are presenting a compelling case for that specific role, you aren't likely to hear back.
First, after receiving no response, you can follow-up. Say, about 7-14 days later. Follow-up with the company/hiring manager to ensure they received your application, resume, and cover letter. We suggest using email, so the decision-maker has time to find your information and respond.
Ensure you include the position you applied for and your full name.
Example:
“Hi Peter. I am a Commercial Finance Manager with years of experience in the e-commerce industry. I’ve been interested in working for Expedia for a long time, so when I saw that you were looking for a Sr. Commercial Finance Manager, I applied right away. I haven’t yet heard back on my application. However, I thought I’d reach out to introduce myself directly because I believe my experience is very relevant to what you’re looking for in your job ad.”
Second, consider changing your focus from submitting resumes to building and leaning on relationships. And from those relationships, getting introductions to hiring managers. Start reaching out, emailing to ask for short informational interview style conversations. If nothing else, call the contact person listed on a job description and ask them a few questions about the position and then mention this individual's name in the cover letter (use what they said as the reason you decided to apply).
