If you want to move ahead in your career, first, identify where you want to go.
What are your specific goals that you want to achieve in your career?
The next step is, what would you like to be doing? Take a look at where you are now in terms of your skills and abilities and where you need to be in order to be successful in that role. You then need to build those skills that you're missing.
So for example, if you need to start doing more presentations, then you need to pursue opportunities to practice presenting. Whether that's going to a Toastmasters club, joining a Dale Carnegie class, volunteer teaching at a local DSL center, etc.
Once you've developed these skills that you've identified as "key", you need to demonstrate to the higher ups in your organization that you possess these skills and that you are ready to take on that responsibility. Perhaps that involves volunteering for more projects, asking for additional work, going out of your way to support other people, or just asking for new assignments from your manager.
The goal, throughout all these steps, is to demonstrate that you have the skills that are required for this other advanced position.
