Interview Questions: "Why did you decide not to pursue a career in the field you went to school for?"

Although this isn't a typical question for an interviewer to ask, in some situations, the hiring manager might wonder why you've chosen to pursue the career path you have, after earning a degree in something seemingly unrelated.

Most candidates who face this question, were initially concerned about finding full-time employment after graduating. So when a well paying opportunity came their way, bills took precedent. However, now that they've had the chance to get their feet beneath them, they became aware of what they are truly passionate about.

So if this question comes up in an interview, be honest about what drew you away, but conclude your response with why you are here in front of them interviewing for this amazing opportunity.

Example: "Coming out of school I was really concerned about getting full-time employment so when a well paying job came my way I took it. But I quickly realized that while it pays the bills, it's not really the work that I'm passionate about. And that's why I'm excited to be here today."
