Catch up with friends and colleagues over coffee or a phone call, talk shop, and ask them to introduce you to others whom you could talk shop with and think about your next move.

Without saying it aloud, if they have a job that could work for you, they will suggest it. If they don't, perhaps the person they introduce you to will. And drinking coffee is a lot more pleasant than applications.
